Before deciding on any treatment you will have a free consultation to discuss your goals and what type of results we can achieve for you. We will talk about your current BMI and set objectives so you can get the weight off quickly and jump start your healthier lifestyle. Candidates for the gastric balloon are typically within a BMI range of 30-40 and trying to lose 20-40 pounds. However, patients with higher BMI seeking greater weight loss may also be good candidates for the gastric balloon. This can only be determined during the consultation. After your consultation, you will have a clear understanding of what to expect during your 12-month program and be on the path to a slimmer and healthier you.

During your treatment, the gastric balloon is inserted into the stomach from the esophagus and filled with a saline solution once in place. This quick, 15 minute outpatient procedure is done under a mild sedative without the need for general anesthesia. Your treatment will take place in our private outpatient surgery center. After the gastric balloon is placed, you may experience nausea or discomfort while your stomach adjusts to the balloon but you may return to normal activities in the first few days.

What can I expect?
Consultation: You will meet with Dr. Zheng to discuss goals and evaluate your eligibility for Orbera – ideally BMI of 30-40. A higher or lower BMI may also be suitable. Calculate your BMI here.

Complementary baseline Liver FibroScan

Balloon placement: Dr. Zheng will place you under IV sedation and take about 15 minutes to place the deflated balloon in your stomach. She then fills it with a saline solution to take up space in your stomach.

Learning new habits: Over the next 6 months, your digestion will slow down so that you eat smaller portions. You will begin to see noticeable results 1-2 months after placement of the balloon. A dietitian team will coach you during 6 monthly follow-up sessions/calls.

Balloon removal: 6 months later, the procedure is performed in reverse to deflate and extract the balloon.

Placing the balloon

The entire non-surgical, outpatient procedure takes about 20 minutes.
First, a diagnostic endoscopy is done to ensure that it is safe to perform the procedure. Once you are mildly sedated and comfortable, the procedure can begin.
The deflated gastric balloon is inserted through the esophagus and into your stomach. A syringe is then used to fill the balloon, with a sterile saline solution, to about the size of a grapefruit.
Removing the balloon

After you’ve had six months to change the way you eat and work with the support team to improve your nutrition, the balloon is removed. The simple and non-surgical procedure is very similar to the placement process, only taking 20 minutes.
